a hug

i've never considered myself a hugger
truthfully i don't really like to be touched
but yesterday i had a student who just seemed angry
and has been all year
she can be disrespectful and plan ol rude
so i took her in the hall
i said what is wrong
why are you so mean
no answer
no eye contact
look away she will go away
so i just hugged her
and she smiled
and every time she has seen me
she smiled
a true heartfelt, thank you smile

sometimes all a person, young or old, needs is a hug

Hug O' War

Shel Silverstein
A Light in the Attic

I will not play at tug o' war
I'd rather play at hug o' war,
Where everyone hugs
Instead of tugs
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses
And everyone grins
And everyone cuddles
And everyone wins.

are you a hugger? do you ever find yourself not knowing what to say but a hug seems to sum it up?

  1. It took me a little while, but I've journeyed from not a hugger to full-on-leg-wrapper hugger. Consider yourself warned :) I've even been known to be a cheek-kisser from time to time.

  3. Karrie, keep hugging! That may have been the first hug that kid had all day (or all week?). Love this!

  4. The touch of another human helps keep people alive. Research has shown that widows or single persons living alone need a hug from someone who cares. I have seen ladies at church hug one another and this is good. For men, perhaps a hand on the shoulder and a kind word.

  5. I love that you made her smile. Who knows when she's been hugged last? Kudos for taking that chance, and thanks for reminding us all to stop and just love on each other from time to time. Love Shel Silverstein, too.

  6. Hmmm, love that you are a hugger. I am, but I find it tough to hug school kids, teenagers. I want to. Just today we said good bye for the summer, but at that age I just struggle sometimes...I probably should just go ahead and do it, yes?

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Proverbs 16:24 Leave me some honey.
